Anattan Adventure Hooks

The Anattan Coast is a region steeped in tension and intrigue, where ancient powers, shifting alliances, and long‑buried secrets shape every step from its silty harbors to its cloud‑crowned mountain cities. Peril here doesn’t roar in from the wilderness - it whispers forth from forgotten ruins, simmering rivalries, and forces that have slept too long. Below are a number adventure hooks crafted to draw DMs and their players into the continent’s layered mysteries, challenging them to navigate a land whose dangers are as deliberate as they are enigmatic.

More information on the Anattan Coast can be found in Athas.org’s newly released gazetteer, Beyond the Silt Sea: The Anattan Coast (https://athas.org/products/anattan-gazetteer).

The Wails Beneath the Dust:

The PCs are contacted after travelers reported that a caravan recently disappeared near the Ruined Citadel. Supposedly the caravan had sought shelter there from the midday sun, when the ruin’s dwarven banshees should have been dormant.

The dwarves of nearby Split Rock worry that something has changed in the pit mine below the citadel, stirring the banshees to wakefulness even under the sun. Whoever uncovers the truth must brave not only the mournful spirits but the deeper horror the undead dwarves died trying to contain.

The Shackled Monarch:

A frightened faction in Nobe seeks the party’s help to investigate strange occurrences beneath the city.

Rumors in Nobe have long whispered that Gavryl - the city’s former ruler - never vanished at all. Instead, some insist that the usurper Utu Maruk chained Gavryl beneath Nobe, seeking to siphon off his power. But now tunnel runners report low, drawn‑out screams, like fire roaring out from a furnace, and blue‑white flames leaking up from the catacombs - a color of flames which no Fire cleric can conjure. Now, with the night of the Ember Moons coming soon, many fear Gavryl is close to breaking free.

With all of Nobe at stake, the alarmed rectors beg the party to descend below and uncover the truth before the city is consumed, either by Maruk’s cult or by the wrath of a monarch who refuses to die.

Egg Hunt:

The Dragon Warriors of the Obsidian Citadel have put out a call for mercenaries. Once a crumbling gray tower in a remote southern pass, the Citadel now gleams in black glass after the Dragon Warriors reforged it. Their aging rocs still circle under their leader Amandia’s command, but the tower’s aerie might soon fade without new eggs.

Their best hope lies on Ilyarth, the middle island of the Dragon’s Tail, where wild rocs nest in great numbers. However, the island is dangerous not only because of the fiercely protective rocs, but also because of the deformed, hostile giants who rule its eastern shore and attack all outsiders.

Unwilling to risk their elite riders, the Dragon Warriors seek adventurers to slip onto Ilyarth, evade or confront the giants, and return with the precious roc eggs. Success could earn Amandia’s favor and a place in the rising power of the Obsidian Citadel, while failure risks the fury of both the giants and the Dragon Warriors.

Lost Sons:

A wealthy merchant noble with deep ties to the Trade Lords of Gilland quietly seeks capable mercenaries after both his sons were seized during a raid along the coast. Taken by one of the Lord Mariner’s ruthless press‑gangs, word has now reached him that the boys were taken to Braxa, the Lord Mariner’s rapidly expanding naval stronghold.

An extremely perilous destination, Braxa is a fortified port ringed by sprawling shanty districts, now swollen with thousands drawn, or dragged, into the Mariner’s service. Anyone suspected of desertion or infiltration is dealt with harshly.

The merchant offers a substantial reward if the mercenaries can slip into Braxa, locate his sons, and spirit them out before the fleet sets sail again. Once the boys are assigned to a war vessel, however, they may vanish into the silt forever.

The Stirring in the Spine:

The hej‑kin and braxats of the Taillin Spine have been dangerous but predictable threats for generations, rarely leaving their mountain territories. However, caravans crossing the Valley of Shereen are now being ambushed with uncanny coordination. Patrols report hej‑kin driving prey toward waiting braxats, as if following a shared strategy, and survivors swear the attacks feel organized.

Rumors spread across the Dataran Plateau of a shadowed figure seen atop ridgelines during attacks, strange horn‑calls at dusk, and braxats brandishing weapons seemingly cobbled together from mining scrap. Whispers claim that an enigmatic leader, someone or something powerful enough to command both species, has risen from deep within the Spine.

Worse yet, scouts now bring dire news: the creatures are gathering in numbers never seen before, moving in a deliberate path toward Dar’Lan, the one place they have always avoided.

If something has united the denizens of the Taillin Spine, Dar’Lan may soon face an assault unlike anything it’s ever seen before. The Watchers of Dar’Lan call for capable adventurers to uncover the truth, stop this mysterious leader, and prevent the mountains themselves from erupting into war.

The Hunger Within the Shallows:

In the storm‑shaped estuary known as the Swarming Shallows, silt horrors breed in staggering numbers, protected from the silt-dwelling hulgors by the endlessly shifting shorelines. But now, with the most recent opening of Sinking Pass, juvenile horrors spill south faster than ever, far beyond anything experienced in living memory.

A grizzled hulgor captain is seeking a crew with grim urgency. Hulgor calves are vanishing, dragged beneath the silt by the surging tide of young horrors, and the captain fears the horrors’ mating season has somehow been unnaturally intensified, unleashing a flood of spawn the region cannot withstand. If the hulgor herd collapses, the southern Silt Sea will fall to unchecked swarms of silt horrors.

To save the hulgors, and possibly the entire Anattan coast, the adventurers must journey into the perilous Swarming Shallows, uncover the source of the horrors’ aberrant breeding frenzy, and stop a catastrophe poised to engulf the Silt Sea.
