Join the traveller as he reaches Saragar. A reimagining of the original series (posted on the Dark Sun Facebook group) with rewritten entries and more locations, all still with the intention of highlighting rarely visited areas on the Revised 2nd edition map.
For today’s clairvoyant missive in the name of the Athasian Survey Project, the image I bring you is a curious one. I am on the move now, and am still not quite my full self, but I shall explain shortly…
As you know I was heading northeast across the Scorched Plateau. I’ve been through this area and the regions north of the Tablelands before with the intention of reaching Saragar. Having heard many stories of the Mind Lords and the preserved land around the Last Sea, I was eager to visit. The Consortium had sent missives on my behalf to the Mind Lords themselves, notifying them of my arrival and intent to visit and share tales of their wonderful creation. They granted me permission to enter just as I was taking off from Vir-Rath. Our airship ended up landing just southeast of Saragar, between the coast and the Burning Plains. Since the weather was quiet that day, it was as safe a landing as we would find for an airship of that size. Upon disembarking, I presented my credentials to the approaching obsidian spheres, as instructed.
This is where things get a bit strange… for after that point, I do not recall anything of my visit.
Those three days are permanently gone from my memory and the pages of my journal are missing. Even with my best efforts at psychic chirurgery and psychometry, it seems I only have a few images left from the experience. The image I have shared with you here, my friends, is one of them.
All I can tell you is what I can glean from the image itself. It is a picture of an idyllic stillness, barely disturbed by the omnipresent silently floating obsidian spheres. It is a perfectly-preserved glimpse into an ordinary, quiet day from a world that hasn’t existed in millennia, the way the land might still look had we not discovered how to scorch the earth with magic.
It’s hard not to feel pained looking at this image. I cannot imagine what it would be like to experience a climate this peaceful any more than you could, my friends. So we are left to wonder what the unseen inhabitants of that city would be experiencing in their day to day lives.
What strikes me as strange is that while I know there were inhabitants present, and there is clear evidence of them in the images…I cannot recall anything about them, let alone meeting them. I cannot even remember their faces. Indeed, my mind is almost certainly not quite the same after these past few days.
The image is too beautiful not to share; I share it with you all in this missive. In this case, it comes with a warning– visit Saragar at your own risk…And don’t get too close to those obsidian spheres.
If you have had a different experience with this region, do share it with me. Perhaps it might shake another un-erased memory loose.
Until we speak again, may the moons guide you.
(To anyone who can guess the source of this image from Earth, I offer you the bag of black marbles given to me by my ssurran merchant colleagues, who thought it a fitting prank gift…)
